How to setup your first Tezos wallet and buy NFTs (with Temple & hicetnunc)

Tezos is an efficient and growing in popularity blockchain used by NFT marketplaces such as Hicetnunc.xyz and Kalamint. But, in order to purchase a Tezos based NFT, you need a crypto wallet. One of the more popular Tezos wallets is Templewallet.com which we’ll use for this tutorial.

Step 1: Go to Templewallet.com with your Google Chrome or Firefox browser. Click on the “Install Now” button to install the Temple extension in your browser. You may get an alert reconfirming that you want to install it.

The Install Now button can be found at the top of the Temple website

Step 2: Click on the Install button for the browser you’re using. In this case, I’m installing the Google Chrome version.

Step 3: You will get taken to the Google or Firefox extension store. Click on the “Add to Chrome” button to install it.

Step 4: Once it’s installed, you will get taken to a webpage asking you to either Import or Create a new wallet. Click on “Create a new Wallet.”

Step 5: Enter a password that you would like to use to login to the wallet, click the Accept terms box, and then the Create button.

Step 6: Super important! Temple will create a Seed Phrase for your account. Think of this as your Social Security Number that you never want to share with anyone. Even without a password, someone can login to your wallet and access your funds by entering the Seed Phrase. Click on the “Protected” grey box to view the seed phrase. You want to write the words down on a piece of paper and keep in a secure place. Do not save it in your Contacts or online application. Once you click on the “Continue” button, you will not be able to view the Seed Phrase again. Again, WRITE IT DOWN ON A PIECE OF PAPER AND KEEP IN A SAFE PLACE!

This is the only time your Seed Phrase will be presented so write it down!

Step 7: Now your Temple Wallet has been created. Your Wallet’s crypto address is in the small grey box that begins with “tz”. In the example below, it’s tz1LvJp…CgWe” Note: this is just a summary of the address. You can view the full address by clicking on the box which will automatically copy it to your clipboard. Simply paste it a document or input field to view it. You will need this address to receive Tezos tokens from a marketplace.

You can view your Temple Wallet’s address this by clicking on the Temple icon in your toolbar

Step 8: Now that you have a wallet, you’ll need to transfer Tezos tokens to it. The best way to do it is to purchase them at a marketplace like Coinbase. Once you purchase them, you’ll need to send them to your Temple crypto address. Here’s a good tutorial to help you set up your Coinbase account and purchase Tezos.

Step 9 (Syncing your wallet:) To purchase a NFT from a marketplace like hicetnunc.xyz or Kalamint, you will be asked to “sign” transactions from your wallet. The first step is to sync your wallet to the marketplace. Let’s say you want to purchase a NFT from hicetnunc.xyz. At the top of the site you will see a “sync” link next to the 3 lined icon. Click on “sync” to sync your wallet.

A pop up will appear asking which wallet you want to sync. Click on the “Temple — Tezos Wallet (ex. Thanos)” link.

After clicking on the Temple Wallet you will be asked to confirm the transaction. Click “Connect” to start using your wallet.

Step 10 (Purchasing a NFT on hicetnunc:) Once your wallet is synced, it’s very easy to purchase a NFT. Just click on the NFT you want to purchase and if it’s for sale, you will see a “collect for XXX tez.” link. Here, I clicked on the “collect for 0.77 tez”

And, like when you synced your wallet, you will be asked to confirm the transaction. Once you confirm it you will see it in your collection a few minutes later.

That’s it! Please comment if I missed anything or if you have any questions.

I’ve led product teams for over 20 years and learned a thing or two.
